THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE ACT
Thembelani Nxesi, Minister of Employment and Labour, announced in a Gazette published on the 8th of February that the new national minimum wage will be R21.69 for each ordinary hour.
The Gazette also provides exceptions for the following workers:
- farmworkers are entitled to a minimum wage of R21.69 per hour;
- domestic workers are entitled to a minimum wage of R19.09 per hour;
- workers employed on an expanded public works programme are entitled to a minimum wage of R11.93 per hour; and
- workers who have concluded learnership agreements contemplated in section 17 of the Skills Development Act, 1998 (Act No. 97 of 1998), are entitled to the allowances contained in Schedule 2.
This amendment will commence from 01 March 2021.
EMPLOYMENT EQUITY ACT
The Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour has extended the deadline date to comment on the Employment Equity Amendment Bill [B 14-2020].
The Bill seeks to amend the Employment Equity Act, 1998, so as to:
- amend a definition;
- to insert certain definitions, to substitute a definition, and to delete a definition;
- provide for the Minister to identify sectoral numerical targets in order to ensure the equitable representation of suitably qualified people from designated groups; and
- to provide for matters connected therewith.
